The Junior National Champion is automatically included on the team; final selections will be made after the senior national championships, where the top singles skaters at Junior Nationals are invited to compete. 2017 Rostelecom Cup Preview - Ice Dance: Tough Fight for Bronze

First full preview of the season! I will be going through every skater and then doing full predictions. Last up is Ice Dance. Short program is on Friday, free on Saturday. Everything below the cut, because it’s long! I would love to hear what you guys have to say, so agree or disagree - reblog, send me an ask - let me know!

The Field 

Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier – Canada – A middle-of-the-pack team, they are five-time Canadian National medalists. They have consistently medaled on the GP circuit for the past three years; however, this will be a tough fight for them as they have three other teams right alongside them all fighting for the bronze medal. 

Nicole Kuzmichova and Alexandr Sinicyn – Czech Republic – Making their Senior GP debut, they were on the junior circuit last year! They are a bit outclassed here and will end up at the bottom of the pack with this field here. 

Marie-Jade Lauriault and Roman LeGac – France – Two-time French Silver medalists, they scored a near personal best score to place third at the Cup of Nice, but they are a bit outclassed here. They will not be last, but they will be near the bottom in this field here. 

Charlene Guignard and Marco Fabbri – Italy – An improving team, they are seven-time Italian Silver medalists. They recently won the Lombardia Trophy competition. They can improve on that, they have a chance at getting the bronze medal here, but if not, they will end up off the podium. 

Ekaterina Bobrova and Dmitri Soloviev – Russia – Five-time European medalists, they are also six-time National Champions and have qualified for the Grand Prix Final multiple times. They have the capability of winning here and are a sure-fire bet for the podium this week. 

Betina Popova and Sergei Mozgov – Russia – A relatively new time, this will be their GP debut and only their fourth competition together as a pair. They scored a personal best at the recent Finlandia Trophy, placing fifth. They are the Host Pick, and are moving up but will be pushed towards the bottom here this week. 

Alexandra Stepanova and Ivan Bukin – Russia – Three-time Russian National medalists, they had a personal best free skate at Worlds to place tenth. They performed okay at Finlandia Trophy but were about ten points below their personal best. They will need to skate better here to get on the podium, with three other teams fighting for the medal, too. 

Alisa Agafonova and Alper Ucar – Turkey – They are an up and coming pair, with a personal best of 163. They have a chance of pushing towards the top five, but without seeing them so far this season, I am not sure what to expect from them. 

Rachel Parsons and Michael Parsons – USA – Making their GP debut, they are the reigning Junior World Champions. A talented young team, they have a good chance at medaling here, but it’s a tough fight and they will need to score personal bests if they want to do so. If not, they will end up towards the middle of the pack. 

Maia Shibutani and Alex Shibutani – USA – They are the reigning two-time National Champions and also three-time (and reigning two-time) World Medalists. I have not seen them so far this season, but they should do well here and have a very good chance of winning in this field. 

Predictions 

GOLD  - Shibutanis SILVER – Bobrova/Soloviev BRONZE – Guignard and Fabbri – Tough fight from here, to sixth place and will be interesting to see how these four teams match up together. 4th – Stepanova/Bukin 5th – Gilles/Poirier

6th – Parsons’ 7th – Laruiault/LeGac 8th – Popova/Mozgov 9th – Agafonova/Ucar  –  Hard to place them without having seen them. 10th – Kuzmichova/Sincyn – Hard to see them placing anything else, though they have a shot at moving up one spot depending on how the team above them does.

The Carama were the most difficult, but Maxim is beginning to challenge Ruslan as my favourite Raistlin, and overall, I don't feel great excluding Yarik. The Crysaniae underwent major changes recently, with Daria Vorobyova taking first place out of nowhere, and Elena Minina being kicked out. Vilena is still waiting for a good production, lol. Only the Takhises remain unchallenged - no one comes close as of now, but Ekaterina Agafonova could make it at some point.

Anastasia Ilyankova and Maria Minaeva are retired, we already knew about Lilia Akhaimova, the rest are still competing, some of them not at their previous level though.
